Have you ever seen a turtle with the “Need for Speed”? Well now’s your chance!

Join the Science Spectrum for the inaugural Turtle Race Day Championship on June 1st from 2:00pm-4:00pm in the Science Spectrum Atrium!

In celebration of National Turtle Races Day, the museum’s collection of turtle and tortoise speedsters will be on display and competing for the coveted “Shell-abration Cup”! From 2:00pm-3:00pm visitors will have the opportunity to view the competitors and learn more about these amazing athletes. Guests will then make their winning predictions for each race and fill out a race bracket. At 3:00pm the checkered flag will be waved, and the first of 5 heats will begin! Stick around to see the championship race and who will be crowned top Testudine! Visitors who guess all brackets correctly will be entered into a drawing to win tickets to see the latest film in the OMNI Theater, Journey to the South Pacific, featuring a variety of sea turtles!

Turtle Race Day at the Science Spectrum is a FREE event and will be located in the Science Spectrum Atrium. Other free activities will include turtle themed crafts and hands-on activity stations. Guests can discover the difference between turtles and tortoises, plus have an opportunity to see and touch real turtle and tortoise shells.

While you’re here, visitors can check out additional resident turtles on display the museum’s collection of live animals and aquariums on the bottom floor of the museum, or take in a showing of Journey to the South Pacific in the OMNI Theater. Journey to the South Pacific will take moviegoers on a breathtaking adventure to the lush tropical islands of remote West Papua, where life flourishes above and below the sea. Join Jawi, a young island boy, as he takes us on a journey of discovery to this magical place where we encounter whale sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, and other iconic creatures of the sea.

Standard museum and OMNI ticket rates still apply.

(10:00am-6:00pm Daily)

It’s a Zoo in Here!

Lubbock’s most popular annual animal event is back again this June. No where else in town can you see elephants, alligators, crocodiles, camels, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, big snakes and tortoises, as well as tons of other cool animals as the Science Spectrum literally turns into a Zoo for four days. Awesome and amazing animal acts, as well as the extremely popular petting zoo, pony and camel rides, live agility dog and police K-9 demonstrations continue to make this event a hit for the whole family!

Two exciting shows will be featured at this year’s CritterFest. Pork Chop Revue and Crocodile Encounters will headline the always popular animal entertainment. Pork Chop Revue is an awesome display of some of the smartest swine in the country. You might have even seen these pig performers on the 2020 America’s Got Talent stage! These bodacious barnyard buddies present a show featuring amazing stunts and laughable antics. You will laugh as you watch these bundles of bacon jump hurdles, waltz and even sing! Crocodile Encounters is an educational reptile show that will introduce you to American alligators, Nile crocodiles and a variety of other awesome reptiles in order to educate the public about conserving these often misunderstood animals. Both shows are always a huge hit with audiences of all ages!
